Similan Islands

Sub Aqua Divecenter, diving Khao Lak, dive Similan islandsThe Similan Islands are made up of a group of 9 rocky islands 90 km north-west of Phuket or approx. 60 km from Khao Lak and it's harbour in Tab Lamu.

Diving in the Similan Islands is the best Thailand has to offer and ranks high amongst the top dive destinations in the world.

The surrounding Andaman Sea hosts a large diversity of marine life, pleasing the macro photographer as much as the friends of big fish encounters.

In general the Similans Islands can be divided in two different under water scenarios:

Similan Islands - East Coast
BeachThe eastern coastline of the Similans Islands provides many white powdery beaches. They usually slope into beautiful coral reefs with an abundance of colors and teeming with reef dwelling fish. These reefs are more protected from strong currents and weather and therefore the perfect place for easy and relaxed diving.

Training dives will be usually conducted here. Underwater photographers will appreciate the variety of soft and hard corals.

The reefs are intact and almost no sign of coral bleaching or impact of the 'Indian Ocean Tsunami' can be found here.

Similan Islands - West Coast
Monkey Face RockThe west coast of the Similans Islands is very different. The shoreline is rocky and rough, facing the storms and heavy seas during the monsoon season.

Hugh boulders create a breathtaking under water scenery. Chimneys, canyons, swim throughs and a greater chance to encounter pelagic marine life.  Diving conditions can be quite demanding and are more for the experienced divers.

Koh Bon
MantaNorth of the Similan Islands lies Koh Bon. This island with it’s bizarre rock formations is not much more than a large cliff, surrounded by deep blue water.

Koh Bon is best known for the regular Manta encounters in the winter months.

With our M/V Nam Sai we organize twice a week daytrips to Koh Bon in combination with Koh Tachai.

Koh Tachai
Koh BonKoh Tachai, north of Koh Bon on the way to the Surin Islands hosts a large reef plateau, offering an amazing variety of soft- and hard corals, gorgonians and reef fish.

Regular encounters with small reef sharks and rays are common at this underwater 'jewel'.

Accurate Maps and dive site news you will find on our partnersite The Similan Guide!

Richelieu Rock
GhostpipeRising from 35 meters all the way to the surface, Richelieu Rock is one of the best-known divesites in the Andamansea.

Due to the exposed location, far off any islands or reefs, a large variety of marine life concentrates in a fairly limited space. From sea horses to scorpion- and stonefish and large barracudas schooling near the surface in blue water.

At certain times of the year, usually between January and April, the chances to meet one of the gentle giants of the ocean, the whale sharks, are higher than anywhere else in the region.

Once or twice weekly we organize daytrips to Riechelieu Rock.

Boonsung & Premchai Wrecks
Diver and SharkJust off Khao Lak's coast are the Bonsoong & Premchai Wrecks, sunken tin-mining platforms.

Easily accessible by longtail boats, with depths of around 20 meter they offer large varieties of marine life and some resident leopard sharks.

Once or twice a week we offer a daytrip to the local wrecks.
